DESIGN RESEARCH DISSERTATION
PROJECT 3: Research for Article Publication
Project 03: Journal Publication
To do:
- Pick a research objective
- Write article based on KREATE template

Week 13
I decided to focus on research question 3 as per Dr. Hayati’s feedback.
The concept and stance that I would be going for is clearly illustrating
the fact that Malaysian museums have little to no respect, design or
systems implemented for the blind. Essentially, the focus of the article
(more public will read because it is shorter) will be to prove that
there is a lacking of consideration for blind users in Malaysian museums
due to the fact that Dr. Hayati prefers the approach where I highlight
the weaknesses of my findings, the true gaps and the lack of research
and system implementation for blind users accessibility. It is a crucial
finding and a shame for a developed country that it does not provide
equal opportunities for education and sharing of culture in a public
space. Lastly, I am allowed to utilise my old work from the dissertation
(findings and overall findings). I can’t control whether Malaysian
Museums wish to adopt methods of accessibility for all users or whether
they want to create equal access for them. I wish to have a holistic
ideal scenario that all users of disability and ability are given equal
opportunities to experience art, culture and education
Week 14
I need to try to be as critical as possible when discussing statements
about the state of accessibility Malaysian museums fail to offer to
the blind. Discuss specific aspects that they do not implement or
certain elements of navigation/interaction that they do not consider
for the visually impaired. Lastly, start finalising progress and
details in blogs.
There’s only one more week so I just need to keep pushing myself to
complete the final submission: journal article, my dissertation blogs,
and finalise this weekly progress reflection sheet. I’m trying not to
stress out too much but I’m really bad at writing and especially making
it clear, concise, critical and logical so this is going to be a very
difficult process for me.

FEEDBACK
Week 13
Direct Feedback:
Focusing too much on the entire article. Describe that this is part of a
bigger study. Take the offense in my stance and talk about how the gap is
huge in Malaysia and how it is not being remedied
finish the journal article first so Dr. Hayati can read it to compare and
contrast it to what I have done in the dissertation. She recommends that I
focus on a specific area in findings. Studies show a complete lack of
attention/accessibility for blind users. Reflect the fact that it is a
surprising finding because my initial studies were regarding accessibility
and interactivity for blind users engagement in Malaysian museums but it
was found that there is a complete lack of it and there is a very
strong gap in my journal article so people reading it can benefit from the
findings. Despite the fact that there is A low population/percentage of
blind users, it is not an excuse to not implement methods of accessibility
for them. The lacking of it is a true finding, so I should cover this
aspect, it will make the article more interesting. She helped me change my
title to suit my shift in approach for the journal article. This approach
sounds more critical, upon visiting and analyzing the sites, the situation
is more dire than thought. My intention was great to minimize the gap but
the true situation is that the gap was not covered. Some articles must be
radical to display the true scenario.
Week 14
General Feedback:
- Keep working on the journal article and increase your critical thinking
- Expedite the process for submission
Week 15
Feedback was given via the Google Docs comments.
- The research intended to minimise the gap between poor and good user interactivity and accessibility for blind visitors.
- The above statement is not possible to achieve as the researcher in this context.
- Capitalise the keywords
REFLECTION
Honestly, this was still my most difficult module that I have currently done
in my degree. I still am not great at writing and have a hard time being
clear, concise and most of all, critical in my words. When I first decided to
study in this degree, I certainly did not expect that I would be tasked to
carry out research and write a whole dissertation on it. There were many times
where I had struggled and felt as though my work was subpar and despite being
supported and recommended by Dr. Hayati and confident myself on my approach
and concept for the journal article, I found it difficult to finish writing it
out of the fear that it wasn’t critical enough or that it did not properly
elaborate my points. However, I managed to pull it off and submit
everything on time. I truly appreciate Dr. Hayati for helping guide me
throughout my struggles and issues in this module.
As for what I have learnt, pacing yourself helps in the long run. Try not to
overdo it in one go, then get burnt out and find it difficult to continue.
Taking it slow and steady actually helps.
Personally, there were many things that I believe I could have done better
but I am happy and proud of my current progress. It was a unique experience
that I have only been able to gain from this module. Although like in the
previous semester, writing academically still stresses me out beyond belief.
I’m almost there and I’m happy with all of my design research dissertations
this semester. All in all, I truly hope that this not only improves my own
critical thinking and writing skills, but genuinely makes an impact in the
field that I have conducted this research on.
