ASSIGNMENT 3 / Primary Data - Research Design

LECTURE

Lectures 1-2 were documented in Design Research Methodology: Assignment 01
Lectures 3-5 were documented in Design Research Methodology: Assignment 02

INSTRUCTIONS

In this assignment, we are tasked to choose a research method (minimum of one) and to justify the reasons why. Additionally, we must design the research instrument to conduct our own primary research for data collection on our research topic. All results must be analysed for submission.

FEEDBACK

Week 09 (21/05/2022)

Do not forget to label the questions chronologically and in a logical sense in your primary data methods as this will help later on during your data analysis when you want to refer to a specific question.

Dr. Hayati suggested that I contact established blind organisations and communities and don't forget to refer to the provided format for emailing the organisations/associations.

Week 10 (02/06/2022)

Look at the Master’s student who conducted similar research and try to find her thesis and view her participants. Go to National Museums and try to call curators or managers or Public Relations (PR) persons and email them to see if such studies or interactivity or accessibility for blind users has been taken into consideration as an extension of their museums.

I emailed the Malaysian Blind Association  (MAB), alas there was no reply yet. I am hoping to post a survey soon which I created using similar questions from the interview for my quantitative data method. I made it open to all members of the blind community (whether the respondent themselves is blind or they are a family member/friend of a blind person and can answer from experience) in order to get as much data as possible in this  short frame of time. I plan to post it on several social media platforms such as Instagram, Discord and most notably, Reddit. I found a Blind People forum that allows you to post questions to those without sight for their input.

Week 11 (09/06/2022)

I can try making an extension of  this questionnaire to see where the respondents are from, as museums overseas are much more considerate and accessible to the blind, this may affect the analysis of data. There is a risk of this tampering with data percentages but it can be a pilot study as long as I can manage to get the same people to respond to this one.

There was still no reply from MAB. The survey has been posted on several social media platforms such as Reddit, Instagram, Facebook and through my peers social platforms as well. Currently, 34 responses have been received. Additionally, I have started making the follow-up questionnaire to view where the respondents are from so I may see if the differences in answers from the country of origin and if the correlation between them is strong enough to make a statement about the varying levels of infrastructure for blind users in different countries.

Week 12 (16/06/2022)
Try to contact  other museum curators internationally and compare and contrast their feedback as they are more proactive. See how their accessibility in their museums is for their visually impacted audience.

From the extension questionnaire, the results were interesting and I was lucky to receive 100% participation from the all the previous respondents. The country's survey results turned out to be majority Asians rather than European respondents which made my thinking incorrect but it also was not surprisingly considering I passed around the questionnaire by word-of-mouth and so did many of my local friends.

REFLECTION

The most difficult part of this assignment was constructing the questionnaire in a manner that would make sense to the respondent and also help me to gain answers that would achieve my research objectives and questions. Another issue was that my target research audience are unable to physically see the questionnaire without external aid or text-to-speech tools, thus severely limiting the amount of responses I could receive in the period of time we were given. I was afraid I was not able to receive the minimum amount of respondents that was stated by Dr. Hayati and I did fall short. My plan is to keep the questionnaire open throughout the summer holiday and keep reposting it on social media platforms to receive the required number and for more data to analyse.

Data analysis was one of the most interesting sections of this assignment for me. I enjoyed reading through the answers and evaluating them especially because many of the respondents put great effort into answering the long text questions. Many points the participants stated regarding accessibility and navigability educated me further about how bad it is in some regions and in contrast, how there is much effort for blind users in other countries.
