Task 03: Type Exploration and Application
30/05/2022 - 27/06/2022 / Week 10 -14

Hours spent: 56 hours

About the project:
My intention was to explore and develop a custom pixel typeface that suits the aesthetic and story of the game I will develop in my UI/UX studies. It was created by testing with different PPI (Pixel per Inch) and is meant to be used as headers for game art and merchandise but also for dialogue and text in gameplay.

REFLECTION

Experience
To sum it up, I felt that Advanced Typography had much more freedom and creative thinking than Typography in a way. There were many opportunities to explore and experiment with different layouts, systems, applications and we even got to design a typeface. On the other hand, it was a lot of work. It felt like I was working assignment after assignment with no breaks and it was honestly tiring. The tasks that were most challenging for me were Task 2A and 2B and task 3. Task 2's GIF was such a pain because it just won't upload and I can't figure out how to make it do so. I attribute it to the massive size (2.12 GB). Apart from that, I loved creating a personal brand identity and customizing it to an aesthetic that I love but have never used in my degree yet. It was a very fun assignment.

The many experiences from this module taught me that type is not static or boring like how I used to think it was, on the contrary, it helps to bring life to pieces that require text. I hope I am able to carry forward my learning and lessons from Advanced Typography into the works I will create in the future as a designer.

Observations
I observed that type is incredibly important in creating first impressions, and creating brand identity. Not only that, but it is more than just text. It is about presenting graphical meaning in your work through your typeface, layout and letterforms. Overall, Advanced Typography has definitely influenced me to the point that I think seriously about the type I need to use in my other modules and personal work.

Findings
I found that each assignment helped to develop a better understanding of information hierarchy for me. Especially in Task 1 Typographic Systems, I really enjoyed testing out placements and manipulating the white space. From there on, in all my works I tried to organize the information well using point size, placement, appropriate colours and white space. I can confidently say that my typographical layouts are much better than they were in Typography Semester 1. I'm happy that I went from being someone that dreaded Typography to being able to genuinely want to learn and explore type on my own.
