Idea Development
Visual Research
To begin my research, I needed to choose a video from the Pasta Grannies channel and after watching several videos I selected the one below: “Foccacia Genoese made by Francesca”. I liked how the steps to making the dish were detailed and precise but the end result is a simple, delicious home staple food.
Chosen Video from Pasta Grannies
To begin the idea development stage, I first rewatched the video several times and broke down the recipe to write out the instructional steps.
Following this, I looked on Pinterest and Google Images for some references and ideas on how to create the layout and illustrate a food infographic.
Sketches
I used Adobe Photoshop to create my sketches as I like their alignment guideline feature for a cleaner look when I organise the information.
For this first sketch, I wanted to use a format where all of the directions are listed on the left side of the page for easier reading with all of the ingredients and additional steps are placed on the right and the step by step process drawings in the middle. This made for a clean organisation and clear categorisation between the different sections of the infographic. I like that there are lines connecting to each large process drawing to indicate what steps or ingredients are linked to them so each step will be clearer to see and easier to understand for viewers.

The second sketch is not much different than the first as it is more of an updated and refined version of it. The biggest change was the title and subtitle arrangements in which I placed lines to create a more dynamic appearance and acts to separate it from the rest of the infographic for a more organised look. I also shifted the ingredients and directions, essentially swapped their positions this is because people tend to read things from the top left corner to the rest thus making it easier for them to comprehend the information without overloading their minds with too many directions at first glance. I moved the olive oil drawing neared to the top for the flour mound to fill up the empty space as it looked out of place and too crowded in the original.
Progression
Below is the exported art board of my food drawings. It includes the process images (mixing, rising and baking) as well as the icon drawings for the needed ingredients. I started by colouring over the rough drawings from the previous sketches. I mostly used the brush tool, alternating between a basic soft brush and a high opacity hard edge brush for contrast and depth.

Colour Palette
I went for a peaceful blue colour for the background so that my main dish focaccia genovese which is a pale yellowish to brown colour will stand out more. The font is white as I thought that black would look too harsh. The white rectangles behind the section headers are meant to highlight the words against the background and add detail to the overall infographic. The title and lines are gold to accent and complement the blue so it does not look too flat and monotonous.
In the final drawing, I added additional small details like the fire element in the third process drawing for more colour variety and overall flair.

After looking at this, I decided to add shadows underneath the plates and bowl in the middle using a darker blue tone in order to add more depth to the overall look.

FEEDBACK
(12/02/2022)
- Don't forget the source
- Design is minimalist and simple
- If I want to add spice, I can try to use different colours for the sub titles (something to contrast with the overall pleasant pastel tones)
REFLECTION
Experience
It was my first time drawing food so it was an interesting experience trying to render and shade it. I struggled with the flour well the most as I tried to capture the texture that it has in real life which proved to be very hard especially with the art style I was going for. In the end, I decided to simple colour over the rough sketch with white and add brown specks and minimal shading.
Observation
I observed that most people tend to read from the left side of the page, specifically the top left corner of a page and then continue to the rest. This is why I decided to switch the ingredients icons and additional steps to the left side and the long worded directions to the right in order to make the mental comprehension for viewers more simple.
Findings
I found that layouts are important in food infographics as they have to be visually appealing to the eye whilst also informative and in a clear manner. Additionally, that utilising warm and cool toned colours together create more depth to the overall infographic.
