Flip 01: Types of Infographics
Before finding any poorly constructed infographics, I decided to look at
what makes an infographic. In my discovery, I found this subreddit on
Reddit called r/Infographics in which users post badly made Infographics.
The pinned post of the subreddit leads to a website which specifies what
makes an infographic an infographic. So, I research some information
on:
What makes an Infographic 'bad':
- Presenting inaccurate information
- Choosing the wrong type of chart
- Including too much information
- Inaccurate scales
- Boring or uninformative headlines
- Wrong placement of axes
- Not presenting complex information in an easy to read & understand manner / Making the reader do more work
- Hard to understand comparisons
- Arranging data non-intuitively
- Misrepresenting data with 3D charts
The first thing we were tasked to do is find poorly constructed
infographics

My Analysis:
- Data, numbers and words are too small to be read comfortably
- A lot of unused, negative space in the first infographic that could have been used
- The vibrant colours and large variety in the colour palette are very visually appealing however they are not organised in a manner that allows the viewers to easily understand what they are categorising.
To summarise, while visually appealing and aesthetic, they do not do
their job as infographics to clearly present the information and details
and to present it in a manner that viewers can easily process and
understand. The data is much too small and difficult to read in the
first infographic and in the second one, it is unclear what each
differently coloured section refers to.
Individual Task
Following this, I found these two pictures on the website 'Canva' that
I like due to their well thought-out layout and overall graphic design
sense. Based off of these I decided to make my infographic, also using
Canva.

Infographic to be re-designed:
I feel that while the minimalist aesthetic looks good, there is too little information and it is quite general. So, I wanted to re-design the infographic to have a more elegant aesthetic like my inspiration images above and with added information as well.
Final Re-Designed Infographic
I decided to go with a calming, muted pink colour with black text to make it easier to read. Information is separated subtly with slightly different tones of pink and is categorised by subtitles and horizontal line shapes. I added a variety of white shapes to add textural detail.
I like the Canva website due to it's large interface with a lot of variety in their tool and colour options. I also enjoy the free shapes and images provided for visual effects.
Usefulness 4/5
Canva is very useful for a website that's so simple to get a hang of.
Its wide range of elements and pictures are easy to find and use for
almost any project. The editing tools it offers such as picture editing
tool, text tool, position and transparency setting feels like an
on-the-go Photoshop alternative.
Design templates 4/5
Canva offers a wide range of templates for just about any occasion. The
options can range from simple designs to more detailed choices. The
style ranges a lot too from professional to casual. It's a good place
for any user to start their design.
Group Task
Week 1 / FLIP Topic 1: Different types of infographic and online tools
Group work
For our first FLIP topic, we are tasked as a group, to research on the
different types of infographic and prepare a presentation slides about
them. We also need to record a presentation based on our slides. The
first thing we did was had a meeting call on Discord to write down each
of our findings in a google document and then compile them in a
presentation slide. After that, each of us recorded a video of our part
in the presentation and they are then stitched and edited into one full
length video.
I am part of group 2 and for our first group task, we were instructed to
research about all the different types of infographics and create a
presentation on it. To start off, we wrote down all our research and
information we found on a shared Google Document. Then, we had a meeting
on Discord to further discuss our presentation and create the
slides.
Below is our finalised slides.
After the meeting, we individually filmed ourselves presenting the slide
and uploaded the recordings into our shared Google Drive Folder, then our
group mate Yi Ki edited everything beautifully into our final presentation
video.
Below is the final video.
Week 2 / FLIP Topic 2: L.A.T.C.H
For our second FLIP Topic, we are tasked to research on the principle
L.A.T.C.H and prepare a presentation slide on it as well as a recorded
presentation. As the same for FLIP Topic 1, we met up on discord and
compiled our findings on Google Slides. We then each recorded the
voice lines for our part in the presentation and edited them into a
video.
