REFLECTION

Experience
I believe that my time in learning typography has greatly enhanced my skills as a designer not just in understanding type but it has instilled better analysis and an improvement in my general design process. Personally, typography was difficult for me to grasp initially and there were many times where I disliked my work and overall I found it hard to continue working but that makes it a better challenge for me to overcome. Another challenge was the deadlines, honestly it felt all felt a little crammed because I worked really hard on each assignment and it felt like it was just one after the other and I really, really struggled at first and barely made it through but now I have much better time management. All in all, I appreciate learning about typography in such an extensive manner, and going through each assignment, I believe I have picked up a better understanding of what it means to create and utilize fonts.  Especially because I aspire to specialize in UI/UX Design in the future and typography is such an important and large aspect of that.

Observations
After studying typography, I noticed that it's important to improve user experience in every type of design as it helps to create harmony and consistency, especially in brand identity and website design. My use of typography is also much better in my other modules and I have gained a strong appreciation for different types of fonts and like utilising suitable ones in my works. Additionally, I realised that I was implementing it into my life in more ways than I thought. For example, when watching shows or looking at social media, I tend to study the typography involved in a lot more detail and even when I go outside, I look at product fonts and judge them heavily and think about how they can be improved or why they are good for that specific item.

Findings
By the end of this semester, I definitely understand that a lot more goes into creating a font than I thought and you have to think about all the details including readability and aesthetics and it is quite difficult to create a font that has just the correct amount of both so it is not too boring, or unreadable. One thing that also really stood out to me was ragging, kerning and leading! I had no idea about these factors and how much they affect the overall design and appearance of the type so they were super interesting to learn about. I also learnt that fonts are really important in determining the type of feeling the messages you want to convey to your audience actually feel. I found that in typography and any sort of design, keen observation and analysis plays a big role in your design process and greatly affects the final outcome of your work and how refined it is, so I did my best to hone these skills and I believe they have improved my quality of work as a designer.
